Lovely Professional University (LPU) is a private semi-residential university created under the state government private university act. LPU claims to be the largest private university in India in terms of number of students on a single campus and is situated on 600+ acres of green area on NH-1 at the entry of Jalandhar city.^[2] The university has more than 25,000 students from 26 states and 16 countries.^[3][4] It is recognized by UGC under Section 2(f) of UGC Act 1956.

LPU is a residential university with separate hostels for boys and girls housing more than 15,000 students. AC and non-AC facilities with different fees are available in hostels depending on student need. The university provides education through more than 150 doctorate, post graduate, graduate and diploma programmes in a variety of disciplines.^[5] They have also tied with international universities for twinning programs and international exposure programs.

University Plans to Run Trams in Campus [edit]

Electric-driven trams may soon chug on tracks on the Lovely Professional University campus, situated in the fertile Doaba region of Punjab.

The LPU has already written to the Punjab government seeking permission to launch the public transport system, and if granted nod, it would be only second place in India, after Kolkata, to have the eco-friendly service.

Chancellor of the university, Ashok Mittal, said that talks are on with Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) Ltd - which operates trams in Kolkata.

“CTC has given its nod to share the technical know-how with us, and by 2014 LPU will have a dedicated tram system,” Mittal said, adding that a circular ring needs to be created to allow the trams to run across the 600-acres campus.

Mittal said that the need for an intra-campus, cost effective and non-polluting transport system was felt after observing that the students and staff had to traverse long distances within the huge campus.

The university invited proposals from the students to address the challenge and several suggestions - ranging from CNG-run auto-rickshaws, electric rickshaws, mini-buses to mono-rails - were received.Finally, it was decided to go for trams. A teams of students were working on this project approached the CTC to keep the project cost-effective.^[10]

1. Prime Minister’s adviser TKA Nair announced the opening ofthe second phase of the 3rd BhartiyaVigyanSammelanatLovely Professional University (LPU). The conference was organized on the theme of 'Science for Global Development' and witnessed participation from nearly 1,500 scientists from across India. The participants made oral, posters and power point presentations on various scien­tific & humanitarian topics.^[12]

2. The conference,BhartiyaVigyanSammelan& Expo 2012 which was organized together by VijnanaBharati, LPU, Punjab Technical University and Punjab State Council for Science & Technology. The conference has already been regarded as a milestone in the history of Punjab by Chief Minister Punjab Parkash Singh Badal. The conference was addressed by Governor of Punjab Shivraj V. Patil and ended with a message to save the environment.^[12]

3. VijnanaBharati, Punjab Technical University (PTU), Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST) and Lovely Professional University (LPU) had organized the biggest science and technology expo — BhartiyaVig-yanSammelan 2012. The four-day expo, which was held at the LPU campus, was inaugurated by Punjab CM Prakash Singh Badal. In the expo, dedicated to the great scientist SrinivasaRamanujam, more than 120 stalls of different dimensions were exhibited.^[13]

4. LPU officials claim that Unimall constructed on the LPU Campus in Jalandhar is the first shopping mall opened by any University in India. The Student Centric mall is multi-storied and is centrally air–conditioned to give a grand shopping experience to its students. At present, there are 75 shops in the mall catering to all daily requirements of students.^[14]

5. The third BhartiyaVigyanSammelan (BVS) and Expo was organized at Lovely Professional University (LPU) from October 11 to 14. This Sammelan was organized in joint association of VijnanaBharati along with LPU, Punjab Technical University and Punjab State Council for Science and Technology. In this event, students got opportunity to participate in Educational Film shows, Adventure Sports, Literary Events, Competitive & Non-Competitive Events and Career Counseling Sessions also.^[15]

6. claudia Ciesla was invited by LPU and was awarded as the Brand Ambassador of the "Lovely Professional University". The Lovely professional University also honoured her as "New promising foreign face in India".^[16]

7. To give a boost to the quality of higher education in the Indian state of Haryana, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced that a mega education city over an area of 1500 acre would soon come up at Mullanpura. Mr. Badal was speaking at the ‘Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan’ (BVS) and ‘Expo-2012’ at Lovely Professional University (LPU) at Jalandhar on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 ^[17]

8. Speaking at the 3rd Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan & Expo 2012, organized at LPU from October 11 th, 2012, Dr Vijay Bhatkar–Father of India's first supercomputer 'PARAM' & Dr Vikram Desai- Head, Development and Educational Communication Unit (DECU)–Indian Space & Research Organization (ISRO) said that India has the potential to be a world leader.^[18]

9. Chief Minister, Punjab Parkash Singh Badal inaugurated the third Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan (BVS) and Expo at Lovely Professional University (LPU). The theme for the even that started on October 11 and went till 14 th October was ‘Science for Global Development." The event was dedicated to Srinivasa Ramanujan, on his 125 th birth anniversary. The expo had 120 stalls spread in an area of nearly 50,000 sq. ft area. Some of the displays in exhibition included displays like Missiles, Rockets, MIG-29, Solar-Panels and many other exclusive projects like Zero Cost Lighting in absence of electricity. ^[19]

10. One of the largest sciences Congress’ in India, the 3rd Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan (BVS) and Expo commenced on 11 October at Lovely Professional University. In the field of science and technology, the BVS is a mega event that gives a unique platform breaks the barriers of language by providing everybody an opportunity to present thoughts in one's own mother tongue. During the organization, three major plenary sessions will hold solid discussions on safe drinking water, affordable health care systems and Agriculture practices in the country.^[12]

Violence on campus [edit]

In April 2011, During a Soccer game a student was beaten by opposition team members and died a few hours later in hospital. The beaten student was from Mizoram and the three accused were Sudanese and Tanzanian.^[20] The racial aspect of the crime led to near-rioting on the campus, destroying a number of kiosks and cars. Tension continued with the university closed for three days, and with police being pelted with stones by angry students.^[21] LPU Pro-Chancellor Rashmi Mittal described the attack as, "students didn’t take the spirit of the game in a positive manner".^[22] The university's management have also been criticised for ignoring earlier racial attacks.^[23]
