Bhupinder Hooda / भूपिंदर सिंह हुड्डा (born 15 September 1947) is an Indian politician and leader of the Indian National Congress who has been Chief Minister of Haryana[1] since March 2005. He began a second term in October 2009 after leading the Congress Party to an election victory. This was the first time since 1972 that a party had returned to power in Haryana 2 times consecutively . He is from the Indian National Congress. He is also a Member of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana.

On April 8, 2010, Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had constituted the Working Group on Agriculture Production under his chairmanship to recommend strategies and action plan for increasing agricultural production and productivity, including long-term policies to ensure sustained agricultural growth.

Early life [edit]

Bhupinder Singh Hooda was born to Ranbir Singh Hooda and Har Devi Hooda at the Sanghi village in Rohtak district of Haryana.[2][3] His father Ranbir Singh Hooda was a renowned freedom fighter.[3]

He is an alumnus of Sainik School, Kunjpura.[4] He did his B.A., LL.B. was educated at Panjab University, Chandigarh and the University of Delhi. He started his political career from Youth Congress.

Political career [edit]

Mr Hooda was elected as a Member of the Indian Parliament (Lok Sabha) for four terms in 1991, 1996, 1998, 2004. He also remained the Leader of Opposition in Haryana's Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2004. He also served as the President of HPCC (Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee) from 1996 to 2001. For three consecutive Lok Sabha terms he defeated Ch. Devi Lal in electoral battles fought in the Jat heartland of Rohtak in Haryana.

He attended international Conferences like World Youth Festival in U.S.S.R, World Parliamentary Conference in China, International Conference in USSR as a delegate of AICC and OISCA and International Conferences in Japan and South Korea.

He is also President, All India Young Farmers’ Association, Haryana ; Ex-Member, Market Committee, Rohtak; Director, Bank of India, 1989–92; Secretary, Farmers’ Parliamentary Forum, 1991 onwards; Founder-Member and Working President of All India Freedom Fighters’ Successors’ Organisation; Working President, National Federation Railway Porters, Vendors and Bearers. Elected as a President for the Khadi & Village Industries Commission Employees Union & Patron for the National Khadi & Village Industries Board's Employees Federation - an apex body of all State K&V.I Board's Employees Unions.

In order to encourage youngsters to pick up Olympic sports,Mr Hooda announced a cash award of Rs 2.5 crore for the state athletes who would win gold medal in any discipline at the London Games.Cash prize money of Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 1 crore for silver and bronze medal winners has also been announced.[5]

Allegations under his leadership [edit]

The Hooda government, is batteling scams and controversies including the Robert Vadra-DLF land deal, the son, Gopal Kanda episode, Jat agitations for reservation, series of rapes, attacks on Dalits and rising incidents of crime.[6] Mr. Hooda licensed a staggering 21,000 acres of land in just 8 years since he assumed office in May 2004. It is alleged that roughly 1,350 acres of land acquired from poor, unsuspecting farmers at a low rate in the name of ‘public interest’ were later licensed to builders after bestowing out-of-turn favours and concessions that helped the land value increase exponentially.[7]

Personal life [edit]

Mr Hooda got married to Asha Dahiya in 1976. They have a son, Deepender Hooda, a Member Parliament and a daughter who is married to Kunal Bhadoo of Abohar (Punjab). Deepender married Swetha Mirdha on 21 February 2010.

  • 2009 - Elected to 11th Haryana Vidhan Sabha from "Haryana - Garhi Sampla-Kiloi" and got 89849 votes. October 25, 2009 - Sworn in as Chief Minister of Haryana for the second time.

Awards [edit]

Bhupinder Hooda was awarded with 19th JAI National Award 2011, as Best Chief Minister of India by Mr. Oscar Fernandes (Former Cabinet Minister) program organised by Journalist Association of India under the flagship of Journalist Federation of India, by Mr. H.K. Sethi Secretary General of Federation, on 3 September 2011.
